About the artist
Name: Laurence Gibson
Language: Kuku Yalanji
Community: Mossman
Laurence Gibson was inspired to become an artist by his mother, who used to paint at home. He was encouraged to join Yalanji Arts by his partner Vanessa Cannon and he now creates line drawings on ceramics (sgrafitto) and for printing on textiles and paper,
His totem is the Cassowary, which was bestowed upon him by his Grandfather; it is one of the main subjects that he paints along with echidna, dugong, barramundi, scrub fowl, and brush turkey. Laurence aims to pass his knowledge onto younger generations.
