Monique Burkhead was born in the Cook Islands in 1988 and grew up in Papua New Guinea until the age of 10 before moving to Cairns where she still lives and works.
The Great Barrier Reef’s stunning, healthy coral reefs are the stimulus for this series of works. However, the artist is concerned about the threat of climate change on this sprawling biodiverse ecosystem at our doorstep. The abnormally warmer waters are affecting the reef, causing large parts of colourful reef to turn stark white. In this stressed state coral expel their algal partner in a process called coral bleaching. If this continues for too long the coral will die.
Purchase of original art directly supports the artist. Artwork is a unique, one-off piece created by hand and may contain marks or blemishes from the studio.
