About the artist
Lou (Louise) Derry was born in Dar-Es-Salam, in Tanzania. She studied in the UK before moving to Australia in 2000. In 2007 she moved to Cairns, Queensland, where she now lives and works. Lou’s oil, charcoal and pastel paintings portray the beauty and vastness of the landscape, with its wide-open spaces, vast horizons, and limitless skies. Her works often convey dramatic weather patterns that prevail in Far North Queensland. Human figures rarely appear in her work, though their existence and implied presence is suggested through subtle references and markers.
“Sky gazing is a great means of reflecting on life. The sky inspires wonder and awe and we’re all vulnerable to its effects.”
