Segar Passi has been making art for over six decades. In the 1960s he was one of eight Torres Strait Island artists asked by anthropologist Margaret Lawrie to record, in paintings and drawings, the history, culture, flora and fauna of the Torres Strait.

Segar uses his paintings to educate young people on Mer about using clouds to predict weather patterns. This intergenerational cultural knowledge exchange is important to Segar and is seen throughout his work and his historic representation of island life.

There is a saying ‘red sky at night, shepherds’ delight’ however we don’t have sheep on our islands, only fish in the sea. ‘Red sky at night’ translated in Meriam language is Mam edge. A lovely sunset like this always tells us - especially our fisherman - that the weather will be clear for them to go out fishing in the morning.
