In 1948, following severe drought and a tidal wave that struck Bentinck Island, the Kaiadilt people including a young Elsie Gabori were moved to the Presbyterian Mission on nearby Mornington Island. Although removed from her country, Gabori maintained Kaiadilt culture, singing its songs with family and community, fishing and gathering bush foods. Gabori found a love of painting after keeping her mother company at the Art Centre. Elsie is passionate about painting about Bentinck Island it's People and their stories.
